We4Rent FAQs page is a useful source that can help you to find out answers to current questions that arise before, during and after car rental.

What documents are required to rent a car?

In order to pick up a car, you need to have the following documents with you (only original documents are accepted, copies are not allowed):

For tourists:

  • Passport + Visa B2 (a small blue coupon, which is issued only to tourists when passing through passport control and is exempt from VAT upon presentation);
  • A valid driver's license (at least one year of experience)
  • Credit or International Debit Card issued on the name of the main driver, the security deposit will be blocked on the card for guarantee.

PLease note - no-name cards like: Visa Electron, Maestro, PayPal, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, etc. are not allowed.

For Israeli Passport holders or dual citizens:

  • Israeli valid driving license (at least one year of experience);
  • Credit card for the security deposit (Israeli Direct or Debit cards are not allowed).

For New Immigrants (Israelis):

Welcome to Israel, the country that was built and settled by immigrants; now you are a full-fledged citizen of this wonderful country.

We have prepared for you relevant information that will help you to rent a car:

All Israelis, including new immigrants, are required to pay VAT (17%).

International drivers licenses are valid only for 12 month, after a year, you must obtain a national Israeli driver license. You have to present a repatriate certificate (Teudat Ole) or any other document confirming the amount of time spent in the country (Israel).

Minimum and maximum required driver age?

Minimum:

  • Since 2019, it has become possible to rent a car in Israel to customers, who have reached 18 years age with at least 1 year of experience (only certain car categories). An additional Young driver fee will apply.

Maximum:

  • Israel is one of the few countries in which there are no restrictions on the maximum driver age for tourists. You can rent a car while you have a valid license (at least six months in advance at the time of picking up the car). For all other countries, see the country and company rental conditions HERE.

Do I need to leave a deposit to rent a car?

The deposit on credit or debit card (international with embossed numbers and name on it) is mandatory for car rental in Israel. At the time of signing the contract, a deposit will be blocked on your credit card (the amount of the deposit depends on the number of days and selected car category). You can ask our manager about the amount of the deposit at the booking time.

Can I leave a deposit in cash or do I need a card?

We are all familiar with small, low cost private companies in Europe that do not require a deposit on the card and allow you to rent a car with a ridiculous cash deposit. There are no such companies in Israel and you will definitely need your own credit card to rent a car. Deposit by cash is not allowed!

How to calculate the amount for a deposit ?

The amount of the deposit is calculated according to the following principle: total rental amount + excess + fuel tank price and additional rental day.

Please note: The final amount of the deposit is announced only by the representative of the rental company at the time of signing the rental agreement, and in some cases you may be asked for a deposit exceeding the amount according to the formula.

When will I get my deposit back?

Refunds by credit card are made within 48 hours after the return and inspection of the rented car. You also have the right to ask the rental company manager to force the process and call the credit company in front of you to unhold the authorized amount on the credit card.

Please note: For customers that used a debit card for deposit, the amount may remain in the block for up to 30 days and sometimes even more, depending on the bank. The car rental company is not responsible for the use of blocked funds by banks on debit cards.

Rental Period and late returning

It is important to understand that car rental day is 24 hours exactly. Usually car rental companies have grace periods up to 29 minutes, any additional delay may lead to additional fines.

In case of late return, you may be deducted for another whole day, while the price for this day will be higher than the daily price of the initial booking. If you cannot return the car on time, it is recommended to notify the car rental company in advance.
Please note: Opening hours of the car hire branches are limited and it is no key box available in Israel.

Is there a warranty for a specific car model, color or year of manufacture?

Car models are for guidance only and can be replaced with similar models of the same car category or a higher class. In Israel, as in many other developed countries of the world, most rental companies use the so-called SIPP codes - these codes are used to classify cars by categories. There is no guarantee of a specific brand, color or year of manufacture (all cars in the fleet are usually up to 3 years in operation).

If in spite of the fact that you still only want a specific car model, please feel free to contact us and we will make every effort to fulfill your wish. For leaving contact please press HERE

Is it possible to use another person's card for car rental?

Unfortunately, there is no definite answer to this question. There are some rental companies that will provide you with this opportunity if we are talking about a married couple with the same names in their passports (both must have passports and a driver's license and be presented in the desk. In this case, the contract is signed up under the name of the cardholder, and the spouse is the second driver (surcharge for a second driver $ 4 per day), but the practice is very rare and requires special confirmation. Contact us with this query in advance (at least 3 days prior to pick up date).

If you do not have a card at all and you want to sign a contract under your friends name or some relatives living in Israel, this is also a way out. It is important to understand that the contract is signed only for the cardholder who takes the rented car in his own name with his credit card and license, in this case the local taxes (VAT 17 % ) will apply.

Can I pick up the car at Ben Gurion Airport and return it to Eilat ?

One way rentals to / from Eilat are possible with an additional payment of $ 200 (One way).

When renting a car for 3 and over days free of charge. It is more profitable to rent a car for 3 days, such a rental will cost you less than the surcharge for a one-way rental, and as an additional benefit, you get unlimited mileage.

Where do I pay for parking tickets or traffic violations?

This question torments many of our clients, let's figure it out.

It is 2 main categories of fines:

  1. Municipal fines (usually parking fines, they are usually placed under the wipers).

n Israel, there are quite a few municipal controllers (they are considered employees of the mayor's office, not the police) who can and will write you a fine for incorrect parking (ignorance of the laws does not exempt you from liability), in particular there are many of them in tourist areas and in big cities.

Most municipalities have the option to pay the fine through the website written on the back of the ticket, or you can pay the fine on the post office(it is one in Ben Gurion Airport as well).

  1. Police traffic violations (received from speed cameras, for driving through a red light or any other fines not given to you personally will come to the car rental company within about six months). After that, the rental company will write off an amount equal to 50 shekels from your card for censoring the fine from the name of the company to the name of the client, thereby essentially becoming a debtor to the police or the municipality, depending on the type of fine. Unfortunately, rental companies in Israel almost never send notifications about the fines received by the client. If you saw that an amount equal to 50 shekels was debited from you, then we recommend that you immediately contact the car rental company or contact us for help.
